Bachelor of Arts in Applied Police Studies External Degree

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) of University of Sri Jayewardenepura together with the EDECU offer Bachelor of Arts Applied Police Studies external degree programme to cater the educational requirements of the policing service. This is a three-year undergraduate degree programme taught in English to give a career-oriented qualification with specifically designed multifaceted knowledge and skills to police officers.

The main objectives of the degree programe are as follows

1. Provide an updated theoretical and applied knowledge of policing and other related social sciences and humanities contents to accomplish duties and responsibilities effectively by demonstrating a broad array of intellectual, practical, and professional capabilities perceiving the changing roles and expectations of police.
2. Make a compassionate, resilient, self-motivated, optimistic, persevering, and open to change police personnel who equipped with enhanced critical, analytical, and communication skills to analyze and understand multiple perspectives and issues encountered in the field to better serve individuals and communities.
3. Make the police officers demonstrated appreciation for standards and ethics within all aspects of the policing process.
4. Integrate policing theory, socioeconomic contents, research and policy demonstrating leadership, initiative and self- direction for professional development and life-long learning of the police

Programe Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of Bachelor of Arts Applied Police Studies, graduates should be able to

• Admission criteria : Passing of GCE A/L in any stream and three years of working experience in police service.
• Student intake: 150 students
• SLQF Level: 5

Volume of work required for award of qualification

• Student Research: 3 credits
• Course work: 90 credits
• Total: 93 credits

This is a three-year undergraduate programme that consists of six semesters. A total of 30 course units will be equally distributed over six semesters along with students’ research to be completed in the final semester of the program. Formative assessments will be conducted within the course while final examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester. The grading system  applied in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for its undergraduate  study programs will be applied in this program while the degree is awarded after the successful completion of the entire three-year programme subject to all the laws and by-laws of the University.
