The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) of University of Sri Jayewardenepura together with the EDECU offer Bachelor of Arts Applied Police Studies external degree programme to cater the educational requirements of the policing service. This is a three-year undergraduate degree programme taught in English to give a career-oriented qualification with specifically designed multifaceted knowledge and skills to police officers.
On successful completion of Bachelor of Arts Applied Police Studies, graduates should be able to
PLO 1 – enter the workplace with the theoretical and applied knowledge to accomplish one’s own duties and responsibilities effectively.
PLO 2 – integrate policing theory, research and policy demonstrating leadership, initiative and self-direction for professional development and life-long learning.
PLO 3 – demonstrate a broad array of intellectual, practical and professional capabilities perceiving the changing roles and expectations of police in the context of a changing society.
PLO 4 – use critical, analytical, and communication skills to analyze and understand multiple perspectives and issues encountered in the field to better serve individuals and communities.
PLO 5 – model a way of working which is compassionate, resilient, self-motivated, optimistic, persevering, and open to change.
PLO 6 – demonstrate appreciation for standards and ethics within all aspects of the policing process.
Volume of work required for award of qualification
This is a three-year undergraduate programme that consists of six semesters. A total of 30 course units will be equally distributed over six semesters along with students’ research to be completed in the final semester of the program. Formative assessments will be conducted within the course while final examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester. The grading system applied in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for its undergraduate study programs will be applied in this program while the degree is awarded after the successful completion of the entire three-year programme subject to all the laws and by-laws of the University.
